Two Physical Models for Spatially Extended Virtual Sound Sources
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present physical models for the sound field radiated by plates of finite size and spheres vibrating in higher modes. The intention is obtaining a model that allows for controlling the perceived spatial extent of a virtual sound source in model-based sound field synthesis. Analytical expressions for the radiated sound fields are derived and simulations of the latter are presented. An analysis of interaural coherence in a virtual listener, which has been shown to serve as an indicator for perceived spatial extent, provides an initial proof of concept.

Notes on Rendering Focused Directional Virtual Sound Sources in Wave Field Synthesis
Wave field synthesis (WFS) is a technique aiming at the reproduction of a desired sound field. It is based on the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral formulated for interior problems [1]. This implies that WFS is per se only capable of recreating the wave field generated by events outside the listening area. In particular, the traditional WFS literature (e.g. [2]) focuses on the reproduction of the so...
متن کاملControl and Measurement of Apparent Sound Source Width and its Applications to Sonification and Virtual Auditory Displays
The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibility of using the spatial extent of sound sources as a mean of carrying information in sonification designs. To do so, we studied the accuracy of the perception of artificially produced sound source extent in a 3D audio environment. We found that the source extent perceived by subjects matched relatively well the intended source extent. Thus so...
متن کاملSpatial Encoding and Decoding of Focused Virtual Sound Sources
Spatial encoding refers to the representation of a sound field which allows storage and transmission of the latter. In the Ambisonics context, sound fields can be spatially encoded when their spherical wave spectrum is bandlimited. The process of deriving appropriate loudspeaker driving signals in order to reproduce an encoded sound field is known as spatial decoding. Care has to be taken when ...
متن کاملActive noise control at a virtual acoustic energy density sensor in a three-dimensional sound field
A common problem in local active noise control is that the zone of quiet centered at the physical microphone is too small to extend to the desired location of attenuation, such as an observer’s ear. The physical microphone must therefore be placed at the desired location of attenuation, which is often inconvenient. Virtual microphones overcome this by shifting the zone of quiet away from the ph...
متن کاملDecoupled Loudness and Range Control for a Source Located Within a Small Virtual Acoustic Environment
For headphone-based spatial auditory display systems, binaural synthesis of sound localization cues typically use source reproduction level as the primary control for source range. This approach can be quite effective when indirect sound is simulated in order to externalize virtual sources within a small virtual acoustic environment. A computationally efficient simulation solution is described ...
